Grubs, are they the culprit of your lawn woes?

Each year homeowners repair damage done by lawn pests. Damage due to drought, fungus, and improper maintenance can provide the perfect environment for these pests to come in and finish off areas or whole lawns. Proper lawn maintenance and other preventive measures can save the costly effects from these pests. A healthy lawn is the best deterrent, so, make sure to use a recommended fertilization program. When these pests are thriving in neighborhoods, other measures may need to be taken. Impact’s Lawn Pest Service will provide season long control disrupting the life cycle of these pests. The systemic treatments will be applied in the spring and late summer to allow the grass fight off these attacks. The most common culprits are white grubs, billbugs, and sod webworms.

Grubs- white c-shaped larvae, found feeding in the root zone with visible legs. These come from a variety of beetles.
Billbugs- legless larvae that bore into the stem depleting resources. The adult beetle looks weevil-like and can cause damage also.
Sod webworms- the small-spotted caterpillars are the larval stage of the tan colored moths seen flying just above the grass blades. They feed on the soft tissue of the leaf between veins.

A couple useful Tips for Maintenance:
1. Keep the grass longer. Cool season grasses grow best here in Utah over 2 1/2 inches long. And, don’t mow more than 1/3 of the blade per mowing.
2. Water 2-4 times per week in until the soil is moist 6-8 inches deep. To achieve this, split the watering time in half in the morning, and run the watering cycles again once finished. These longer, less frequent waterings push the water deeper into the root zone.
